Home is an interesting concept to me. It is more than a structure, more than a place to rest your head. It's a place to settle yourself, feel rooted, comforted, and safe; a base to return to when your world stops spinning. For nearly 5 years I’ve had the honor of illustrating homes and buildings that are special to people. I love the chance to elicit nostalgic feelings, cementing memories in the very human made lines of ink in each portrait.
This was a personal challenge to reawaken my childhood imagination. I created 100 fictional creatures and wrote stories to go along with them. Many of them represented an amalgamation of characters I met in real life, experiences I awkwardly waded through, and the very human emotions that fell out of those interactions. Each is a study of the parts we deem ugly in ourselves, that when released into ink, feel relatable and cathartic to embrace. Each is also available for a full-time storybook audition should you be drawn to one or a few endearing weirdos.
I may eventually turn them into their own little yearbook of sorts. Stay tuned.
